Welcome to the homepage of the First African Geothermal Conference. The
conference was held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia from 24th of November
till 2nd December 2006. It was organised by the Geological Survey of Ethiopia.
The conference dealt with all aspects concerning the geothermal
resource from initial exploration to development and utilization, including
case histories, environmental, social, legal, institutional, economic
and financial issues, private sector participation, direct resource utilization
schemes and possibilities.
The conference was part of the activities under the African Rift Geothermal
Facility (ARGeo), a regional project of the Global
Environment Facility (GEF). In the framework of ARGeo, conferences
are held periodically in the region, to serve as fora for the exchange
of information and experiences. The next conference, ARGeoC2, will be held
from 24th November until 28th November 2008 in Entebbe, Uganda.
Given the worldwide recognition of the magnitude and quality of the geothermal
resource base of the region and the interest to contribute to its development,
specialists engaged in the exploration, development
and utilization of geothermal resources worldwide participated in
the conference, as well as representatives of bi- and multilateral institutions
engaged in geothermal project financing and implementation. In addition,
participants both from within the current ARGeo region and from other
African countries attended. For the purposes of the geothermal
community in the region staying abreast of developments worldwide and
of facilitating the wide dissemination of information on the geothermal
resources of the African Rift, the conference was fora for
international participation.
