During the conference, two field trips to
geothermal prospect areas in the
East African Rift System have been organised. They provided exposure to geothermal fields in two distinct geological settings as well as to the variety of rift tectonic, magmatic, sedimentological, geomorphologic and environmental conditions in the areas to be traveled through.
Aluto Langano and the Main Ethiopian Rift
A Pre-conference field trip is took place on November 25-26 with focus on the Aluto geothermal field and pilot power plant, in the central sector of the Main Ethiopian Rift (MER) geological province, 190kms by a good tarmac road to the south of Addis Ababa and about 20 kms on an all-weather lose surface road. It also included crossing the western and eastern margins of the MER, traveling along its axial zone, visiting selected sites of hydrothermal activity and distant views of some geothermal prospect areas.

Tendaho and Central Afar
The Post-conference field trip took place from November 30 to December 2, 2006 to the drilled area of the Tendaho geothermal field in the Central Afar geologic province, 600kms by an excellent tarmac road to the northeast of Addis Abeba. It included traveling along the tectonic and magmatic terrain of the Northern MER, the unique Southern and Central Afar Rift floor terrain, the Meteka area of hydrothermal activity, climbing the western margin of the Afar Rift, traveling back to Addis Ababa along the scenic rift marginal grabens and rift bordering plateau.
